A sample page for Marvel
Thunderbolts 146 pg 20

On this page Mach 5 has just blasted some monsters and saved the now semi-defeated Luke cage who warns him there are more monsters. Then a thunderous running sound can be heard and the monsters are startled.

You're linework is phenomenal! Do these pages mean you were able to land a job with marvel yet?

No, marvel straight up told me they were having a hard time keeping thier existing guys busy, and that they didn't have much for new guys. They also told me to stop doing samples, and just go do a book of my own.

Man, well I think you are certainly skilled enough! Hopefully all these superhero movies start selling more comics. What about you're star wars work? And if you don't mind my asking how did you get in with marvel to begin with?

I went to the Kubert school, who puts you in touch with a lot of editors, that, and I've been going to as many cons as I could and showing my stuff to editors for the last 3 years. I got picked out of the dc and marvel portfolio searches the last couple years also so that helps some I guess.

Ha yeah I guess that would help ; ) So have you thought about working for a company a little less sought after than marvel in the mean time? Or are you already doing that or what for work?

Just wondering because you've at least started with professional comic companies and I haven't applied for work in the field yet. I don't even go to an art school, shamefully it wasn't my major, I haven't even taken any art classes yet but I will finally in the fall as a minor, it is really what I would like to do.

To get work as a colorist I will tell you this, comic company's want you to color professional comic pencils. Coloring pin ups is good for illustrative work etc, but if you want to work in comics you must be working in the format ie penciling pages, inking pages, coloring pages, or lettering pages. It would do you well to get together some of your best pieces, maybe 10 or 15 and hit up a comic con and talk to editors and artists about your stuff and what you need to do to get work.

The classes you need to get coloring work would be color theory, and photoshop. Also take some painting courses because understanding painting will make your digital painting and coloring better. The big one that colorists need is color theory though. Then you just need to practice practice practice on comic pages.

If it's what you want to do, you just have to keep at it, and it will eventually happen =)
